High-Elevation Wildflowers

Mid-summer is a fantastic time to go into the mountains and see a wilder variety of wildflowers.  Timing the peak of the bloom is dependent upon elevation, latitude, and weather.  At Albion Basin by the Snowbird Ski Resort (elevation 9000’), we’ve found that the peak bloom is around 24 July each year.

Be prepared for a veritable ocean of wildflowers.  Photographing at an angle parallel to the terrain, you’ll have a lovely splash of color in the background from out-of-focus flowers and foliage.  Also be prepared for insects (a lesson I’m learning only very slowly).

These flowers, approximately 1 week beyond peak bloom, were photographed on 30 July 2005 with an Olympus C-5050Z at 21.3mm focal length, 1/100s at f/5.6.
