“Checkerboard Shadows”

One of the more interesting parts of Zion National Park is at the southern end, just east of the big tunnel.  There is a marked change in scenery as the road wends its way through a delightful topography of sandstone (with varying colors, striations, and shapes), profusely decorated with trees and bushes.  After having come to this particular spot many times and not finding another (more official) name, we have named it “Checkerboard Shadows” as it is near (in the shadows of) Checkerboard Mesa.

Whereas the usual photography stops on a trip will tend to cater more to the lengthier attention span of my camera than that of my children, this spot offers something for everyone.  Except for the echoing caws of the occasional fellow tourist and a few crows soaring high overhead, there is plenty of peace and quiet here.  The sandstone features invite exploration through walking, crawling, and climbing.  I find plenty to photograph (and change lenses often).  We usually spend a couple of hours here for lunch and quality out-of-car time.
