Hailstorm in the Making

Fire ravaged this wonder just a few short years ago, and just one day after my family and I visited it.  My trips back there have been infrequent since the fire — I could blame that on not having had much free time in the last few years, but the more likely reason is that it is difficult for me to see this the way it is now when the memory of how it was is so indelibly impressed in my mind’s eye.  Fortunately, the lower portion of Cascade Springs hardly shows any signs of the fire (other than the new boardwalk).

The clouds were churning fiercely.  I had a few minute with sunshine on the springs and dark, ominous clouds in the background.  20 minutes after shooting this shot, I got caught in a hailstorm with 1-inch diameter hail pelting me and my equipment while I was trying to get a close-up shot of a group of Bigtooth Maple leaves.  Despite sitting half an hour through this hailstorm, I had to abandon my goals of getting that close-up.  Maybe next year!

For this shot, Canon EF 20-35mm f/2.8L lens, set at 20 mm focal length, 1/25s at f/16.
